The History of the Tokyo Research Center of Clinical Pharmacology
- A Track Record Backed By Over 40 Years of Experience in Conducting Clinical Trials -
The Tokyo Research Center of Clinical Pharmacology has a long history that began with the establishment of Medisel Institute Co., Ltd., the predecessor of the current Tokyo Research Center of Clinical Pharmacology Co., Ltd., in 1975.
The Predecessor of the Tokyo Research Center of Clinical Pharmacology
The company started consultation services on pharmaceutical research with an office located in Hamadayama, Suginami Ward. In 1978, the head office was relocated to Nishi-Ikebukuro in Toshima Ward, the laboratory was expanded, and independent research on pharmaceutical formulation development commenced. In partnership with Tokai Capsule Co., Ltd., rectal absorption was successfully improved using soft gelatin rectal capsules, resulting in three patent applications. In 1981, the company began accepting contracts for bioequivalence studies on healthy adults following amendments to the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act. A partnership was established with Kiyose Jogu Hospital and Tokyo Musashino Hospital. In the field of clinical pharmacology, the company received guidance from Dr. Tsuneyoshi Tanabe, Professor Emeritus at Hokkaido University, and Dr. Takashi Ishizaki, Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Department at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (both at the time), and regarding volunteer screening, it began diagnosis and judgment under the supervision of Dr. Saichi Hosoda (professor of cardiovascular medicine at Jichi Medical University at the time), Dr. Makoto Shiina, and Dr. Kenji Takazawa (currently Director of Shinanozaka Clinic).
In 1984, the Hohsen Clinic (a medical institution specializing in clinical trials) was established in Komagome with 18 beds, followed by the opening of the Second Hohsen Clinic with 10 beds. In 1986, the Ohtori Clinic with 10 beds was established in Komagome, and a company training facility was opened in the city of Komoro, Nagano Prefecture. Kohtaro Yasuda was in charge of clinical trial SOPs, on-site guidance, and ethics committee management for all three clinics.
Hohsen Clinic became independent in 1987, and Waseda Clinic, a medical institution specializing in clinical trials, was built in Takada, Toshima Ward in 1988, with Medisel Institute Co., Ltd. providing full support to Waseda Clinic in running clinical trials.
In 1993, after progressively dissolving Medisel Institute Co., Ltd., the Tokyo Research Center of Clinical Pharmacology Co., Ltd. succeeded it through investment by TOHO PHARMACEUTICAL Co., Ltd. (now TOHO HOLDINGS Co., Ltd.), etc.
With a pioneering presence in conducting clinical trials and developing new drugs in Japan at its core, the company has achieved all kinds of accomplishments over its many years of experience. A research institute with over 40 years of experience in conducting clinical trials is unparalleled in Japan. Kohtaro Yasuda not only obtained patents for new pharmaceutical formulations but also contributed to the early adoption of GCP based on his extensive experience complying with GMP and GLP.
